Warning Signs
On October 7, 1981, PearlSpace (formerly the Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society) was created as a grassroots organization dedicated to the prevention of gender-based violence and support for survivors impacted by violence or abuse. Since our founding, we have grown and expanded in response to the needs of the individuals and communities we serve.
Today we provide emergency house programs, 24-hour response services, drop-in centres, outreach services, referrals and advocacy. With a dedicated team of employees and volunteers, we serve the needs of people in the Sea to Sky Corridor and Stl’atl’imx regions including Nations of N’Quatqua, Samahquam, Lil’wat, Skatin, Xa’xtsa, Squamish, and the communities of Pemberton, Whistler, and Squamish. The population in our service area is disbursed over approximately 400 kilometres.
PearlSpace is the only service provider in the Sea to Sky Corridor and Stl’atl’imx regions working from an intersectional feminist framework to provide inclusive supportive services for individuals and communities.
Our Mission
PearlSpace promotes equality and empowerment of women, Two Spirit, gender-diverse, non-binary, trans people, and children/youth. We work from an intersectional* feminist framework. By responding to and working for change, we honour diversity and inclusion helping folks meet their evolving needs throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor and Stl’atl’imx regions.
*Intersectionality is the interconnectedness of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
Our Vision
Story of PearlSpace
PearlSpace logo is rooted in the natural landscapes of the Sea to Sky corridor and Stl’atl’imx regions of which we offer our services. Its circular shape, colours, and graphic elements are reflective of inclusivity and community which offers compassionate shelter from life’s cyclical storms. The stone and line shapes are representative of movement, change, and growth in nature and found in the rivers and forests throughout the communities of this region and provide all a reminder to see the beauty in nature’s cycles and to take a moment to breathe the freshness of air after stormy weather, revel in the stillness, be present and accepting of changes that are helpful in forging forward along the path of our unique journeys. A pearl symbolizes beauty emerging from friction, of being protected from lives most harrowing experiences, and of being honoured for one’s journey.
PearlSpace is symbolic of replacing fear with hope, striving always to be helpful, and offering an inclusive place where everyone belongs.
