Perinatal Substance Use Support

This program provides pre/post natal one-to-one, compassionate emotional and practical support to women/birthing individuals who may need assistance in the areas of substance use, poverty, and homelessness.

The goal is to provide non-judgemental support, to assist in navigating various government systems and community services, assist in fostering community connection to promote healthy pregnancies, and build community around the woman/birthing individual to help improve pregnancy outcomes.

This program offers support to:

  • Women/birthing individuals who are pregnant and/or recently postpartum.
  • Women/birthing individuals who are using substances (legal, prescribed, and/or illicit), in recovery and/or struggling during this time.
  • Emotional support
    • Following participants’ lead to create goals and safety plans
    • Providing compassionate and confidential listening
  • Resource navigator
    • Connecting participants to resources in the community
    • Help with advocacy, attending appointments and meetings with healthcare, social workers, government agencies and/or the court system
    • Access to medical support with a local doctor
  • Practical support
    • Transportation to appointments
    • Access to food supports and prenatal vitamins
    • Free pregnancy tests

Participation is voluntary; the program is free of charge and confidential.

This program is funded by the BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre, Provincial Health Services Authority and provided in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health.

Anyone can refer to Perinatal Substance Use Support including family, physicians, public health nurses, and other community professionals. Participation is voluntary, and the program is free of charge. Complete confidentiality is assured.
